Thanksgiving, 2007
Greetings,
I'm releasing my latest sculpture of the Mini-Conundrum Series; Mini-Conundrum V2 (Version 2). Like it's predecessor, V2 uses some pieces from my original Mini-Conundrum (four) and is composed of 17 separate pieces. But, that's where the similarity ends; V2 has an assymetric assembly so it will be a much more challenging to put together especially if you don't use the photographs for clues.Like my other Conundrum sculptures; V2 will be colorful because it's composed of an assortment of metals; I will provide at least six different metals in each sculpture. This metals list, which may be revised from time to time, so far includes:
Zinc Brass Copper Cast Iron Aluminum Silicon Bronze Bearing Bronze Aluminum Bronze |
For appearance sake, all outside edges are lightly beveled; this provides a very precise geometric appearance when the sculpture is fully assembled. The final piece locks into place and can be removed with a special hexagon shaped key that I will provide.

There are two distinct exterior surface finishes for Mini-Conundrum V2; a lighter patina finish and a brushed metal finish, both of which are pictured below.

P.S.
- Where am I going with this
you may ask; the answer is quite simple. I want to create
a puzzle sculpture entirely out of precious metals but the
economics are prohibitive. You see it takes about 3 times as much metal
at the outset to create each geometric piece. The
original Mini-Conundrum for example, is a total of 8 cubic inches of metal which in equal
volumes of silver and gold amounts to 62 troy ounces of metal; that's
$300 of Silver (Ag) plus $32,000 of Gold (Au) at current spot pricing. So if you need 3
times as much metal at the outset, well, that figure stops me cold. On the
other hand, with smaller sculptures, and the use of some precious metal alloys, the investment can become
within reason. Anyway, the numbers are getting smaller so
it is my plan to assemble a special mill with a metal recovery
system at some point, so, I can attempt this project..............
Stay tuned!
